Optical fibre to the upper station.

As part of a major project, the existing copper cable between the middle and upper stations on the Stockhorn was replaced with an optical fibre cable. cablex assumed overall technical responsibility for pulling the cable, which was successfully completed in collaboration with Arnold AG, a subsidiary of BKW. The switch from copper to optical fibre technology commissioned by Swisscom now ensures that the upper station is also supplied with the latest technology. In future, the optical fibre cable will transfer data for the following facilities on the Stockhorn:

  • Telecommunications connections
  • Signals and data of the turnstiles at the middle and upper stations
  • Restaurant checkout systems
  • Credit card terminals in the middle station and in the restaurants
  • Webcams
  • Data for police radio, Skyguide and the BKW directional radio network

The splicing work will be carried out by cablex until the end of the year. The final switch to optical fibre will then take place in 2025.

The collaboration was always friendly and relevant, with a clear focus on achieving our set goals. The optical fibre cable will make our telecommunications and data connections more stable and fail-safe.

Geographical challenges masterfully overcome.

While pulling cable over long distances is part of everyday life for cablex, the Stockhorn project posed a particular challenge due to the special geographical conditions. The difference in altitude of 700 metres placed high demands on the team. Additional safety measures were taken to provide the best possible protection for both employees and equipment. The team members were specially prepared for the challenges of pulling cable in this steep terrain. The employees who accompanied the project are already used to such conditions. Despite the difficult conditions, cablex succeeded in completing the cable pull project precisely and without incident. Thanks to an existing cable route up to the summit of the Stockhorn, no excavation work had to be carried out.

This project was exciting and challenging right from the start. We often carry out such projects, but mostly in flat terrain. This is why the preparatory work with all those involved was very important. It worked wonderfully in every respect, and I would like to thank everyone once again for the pleasant and professional collaboration.

Other activities as part of the major project.

In addition to installing the optical fibre connection, cablex also provided support in laying the water pipe. In the past, the water was transported to the mountain station in canisters. Today, it is pumped from the middle station to the upper station, which makes operations much easier.

The collaboration with cablex was always extremely pleasant and solution-orientated during the entire project phase. Together, uncomplicated solutions were found that worked in the end customer's favour. I have always greatly appreciated the short decision-making processes and the personal contact with the people involved at cablex."
