The congestion on Avenue d'Echallens in Lausanne caused by the numerous road users has repeatedly led to accidents. Pedestrians, car drivers, cyclists, buses and trains were all moving at the same time, creating a confusing and dangerous situation.
In order to make the transport infrastructure safer and more comfortable, the railway between the Union-Prilly and Lausanne-Chauderon stations is to run underground in future. For this purpose, a 1.7-kilometre long tunnel has been under construction since summer 2017. This runs double-track in a eight metre wide and 15 to 30 metre deep subway under the Avenue d'Echallens. The tunnel is expected to be put into operation in spring 2022.
