In January 2020, cablex was commissioned by Swisscom to build a mobile network in the new wing of Geneva Airport. We immediately came up with a design and the cost estimate. In April 2020, the go-ahead was given for the completion of a 3G, 4G and 5G indoor mobile network.
Operating site with many regulations.
Setting up antennas during the onset of the Corona pandemic didn't make things any easier. In addition, all of Geneva airport’s strict regulations had to be complied with. Identity checks, compliance with COVID standards and coordination with all the contractors working on this mega construction site were a challenge for our installers throughout the project. This didn’t stop them from doing an impeccable job as always, however.

Wireless implementation in Geneva.
Covering two levels, the east wing of the airport is over 500 m long and will handle more than 5000 passengers per hour. User expectations in the mobile network are always very high in this environment.
A total of 150 indoor antennas were installed and 4.5 km of coaxial and 5 km of optical fibre cable were laid. In our concept, the three operators’ equipment was installed in an environment called Master Unit . From there, distribution is carried out to the 15 technical rooms (Remote Units), to which our antennas are connected by means of a optical fibre repeater for the 3G and 4G technologies and a direct connection for 5G.
Our team of technicians integrated the antennas quite inconspicuously into the airport’s ceiling construction in order to meet architectural requirements. They were embedded in the ceiling with the help of telescopic mounts and painted with black paint. Our devices fit perfectly into the environment of the technical installations.
All installation, measurement and documentation work was successfully completed. The interaction between the WIRELESS and INFRASTRUCTURE & BUSINESS SOLUTIONS was flawless. It took us more than 19 months to complete this project. The equipment was commissioned in time for the opening of the East Wing on 14 December 2021.
Congratulations to all cablex colleagues who were involved in this great project!
